Before Cleaning the Wheels
Know that there is a variety: The first step in wheel care is recognizing that not all wheels are made the same. Wheels are made from different types of materials and coatings. The product used on the wheels is determined by the surface which can range anywhere from chrome, powder coated, painted, to polished aluminum and many more.
Identify what is being driven on: The next step is to determine what kind of wheels on the vehicle. Most wheels that come with a factory-purchased vehicle are clear coated wheels. However if they have been replaced with aftermarket wheels, find out the surface material by contacting the manufacturer. Some wheels may even be coated with two or three different types of coatings, depending on how customized they are.
Choosing The Right Wheel Cleaner
When using a wheel cleaner to remove brake dust and grime there are three products Meguiar’s that are available to choose from: Meguiar’s Hot Rims Aluminum Wheel Cleaner, Meguiar’s Hot Rims All Wheel and Tire Cleaner, and Meguiar’s Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner. Meguiar’s Hot Rims Aluminum Wheel Cleaner is safe for uncoated or polished aluminum, anodized and powder coated wheels. This is the safest Meguiar’s wheel cleaner and is also recommended if the wheel type cannot be determined. Meguiar’s Hot Rims All Wheel and Tire Cleaner is safe for all factory coated wheels. Meguiar’s Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner is specifically designed for all chrome plated wheels, and is sure to give a mirror-like finish.
Knowing the Consequences of Choosing the Incorrect Wheel Cleaner
Using the wrong product with the wrong surface can potentially cause permanent damage to the surface of the wheels, brake or even suspension components. Make sure to read the label on any product used and check that it is meant to work with the wheels’ surface. If unsure of the wheel type and unable to contact the manufacturer, start with the most gentle wheel cleaner and testing a small area.

This gets 5 stars from me. I was absolutely amazed at how well this stuff cleans. Just a little about me. I have never cared how my cars have looked. Im almost 50 and every car I have owned got washed about twice a year and the inside got cleaned about once a year if they were lucky. I recently bought a used nissan leaf that was in awesome shape. Something about this car has triggered something in me to really try and keep it looking great so I bought all kinds of cleaners for both inside and out to try and help me keep it that way. Maybe its the new to me thing and in a few months time I wont care again but for right now, its actually kind of fun. Anyways Here is me putting meguiars up against sonax wheel cleaner.where to start. I put this up against meguiras hot wheel and rim cleaner and I must say I was a little shocked. Here was my setup.2001 dodge caravan. The rims have never been scrubbed and the wheels have never been scrubbed either. Sure they have went through automatic carwashes, my wife usually did it about once a week but never have these rims been scrubbed at all by hand. Surprisingly they were not nearly as bad as some youtube videos I saw so I guess car washes once a week still helped out a bunch.Anyways following directions for both, the sonax sat on the rims for 4 minutes and the meguiras about 30 seconds.I really expected more from a $20 bottle of wheel cleaner, I saw lots of youtube videos and I just felt this was going to stomp meguiras. Keep in mind I had no plans on putting this up against anything. Turned out I forgot I put the $5 add on bottle of meguiras in an earlier order to meet my minimum then the next day I bought this.Anyways the sonax did ok. It took a fair amount off, It did turn nice and red which makes you think its working its butt off. After the rinse though, it was still very dirty. The meguiras rim, you could see in just 30 seconds it sliding right off. Rinse and inspect and it got a lot more of the rim cleaned than the sonax rim.So for the other 2 wheels I did the exact same test but this time I used a small round detailing brush to get into the lug nut holes and went ahead and used it to go over the entire rims, mind you this was a fairly soft brush so there was no real scrubing action here. The sonax wheel did better this time but still left some areas on the rim. I suspected as much as it was not a scrubbing brush I was using. The meguiras rim just amazed me. Same brush, almost no pressure at all and after the rinse that rim looked amazing. There were still a couple spots but it got the majority of it off with so little effort. So my conclusion, Sonax did ok. Not $20 ok but it did work. The $5 bottle of meguiras though, it blew it away. In a no touch situation it was better than sonax but not night day difference. In touching the rims to clean though, sonax again did ok but that $5 bottle did it in a fraction of the time. The downside with meguiras is you will go through more of it quicker. I did 4 rims and tires and I had between half and 1/4th left. So if sonax can clean about 15 cars with one bottle then maybe it is more price efficient but it also took longer and more cleaning effort.———————I dont care if I go through a bottle a car, the less time I spend bent over trying to clean a wheel and rim will make up for the extra cost.I did not mention that after my test was done, I went over all 4 wheels with meguiars tire shine. I have to admit, the wheels on that van look absolutely fantastic but the rest of the van looks like crap lol. It hasnt seen a wax job in years. The paint is fading, water does not slide off at all. I bought a bottle of nu finish so I cant wait to see if it can do anything for it, It really needs a complete paint correction but it would cost way to much to have it professionally done and I dont have that kind of money to waste on an old van.

If you follow the directions on the bottle: wet the wheels, spray the wheels and tires, and let the product stay on the sprayed surfaces no longer than 30 seconds you will get the desired results. If you leave the product on too long, it is caustic enough to eat through the clearcoat on some wheels. That being said, I’m so happy with how this product worked on my 2014 Toyota Rav4’s stock wheels. I sprayed water on my wheels one at a time, then sprayed on the product and quickly scrubbed with a wheel brush on the outside and the inside rim. Making sure to do one at a time very quickly, with extra care to rinse off the product thoroughly before moving on to the next wheel. The results were immediately evident. The product removed the grime, brake dust, and grease from both my wheels and tires within seconds of spraying it on. Very little scrubbing was needed to achieve excellent results. I finished by wiping the wheels with a microfiber cloth, and shook my head at how easy using Megular’s Hot Rims Wheel Cleaner had been.I have previously used Chemical Guy’s Diablo which requires me to mix it prior to use. I thought I liked Diablo, but I won’t be buying it again as Hot Rims did a much better job. Hot Rims was also much easier to use and gave me the desired effect without the need for a lot of elbow grease.Definitely recommend this product, but you will want to check out the warnings to make sure your wheels will not be negatively effected by its chemical make-up.

First time user of Meguiar’s G-9524 Wheel Cleaner on 2015 Ford F150 Chrome Wheels, never cleaned before. My prior attempts to remove baked on brake dust with a pressure washer failed with grime completely unphased. A few observations:* Will foam up when sprayed on wheel* Easily removes debris from wheels with kitchen sponge or old tooth brush, then rinse with hose.* No need for multiple wash & rinse. Wheel was like new on first try.* No concerns found from harsh chemicals on skin or breathing vapors, no odor* To spray & rinse alone will not remove baked on brake dust to full brightness. Surface must be brushed or wiped with kitchen sponge or old tooth brush to work. Unwiped areas will remain dirty.* Instructions say to spray on and rinse off within 30 seconds. I did not observe any short or long term problem if left a bit longer. However, rinse thoroughly with a garden hose when done.* Impressed enough to use on wife & sons car and used about half bottle.

I use this on four 17″ OEM rims. I used to clean all four with a brush (shape and size of a broom) using auto cleaning detergent, and it was a chore to thoroughly clean them all. With this, it does most of the cleaning work while I let it sit for about 30 seconds before rinsing each rim with water. It works! The problem I have with this is by the time I was finished, there was about 20% left in the bottle so that’s not enough for the next cleaning. So if you like it after you have tried this, get the 1 gallon ($20 or less if you can find a good deal) so you can save some money and have plenty for future uses.I also recommend buying a heavy duty spray bottle (bought one from Home Depot for $4 on sale). The reason is because this spray bottle top is very difficult to remove (had to use a monkey wrench) if you need to refill, and the opening is small so it’s going to be a mess refilling unless you have a small funnel.

Lost about an ounce inside the box. Worked great though, removing human hand grease from finished wood doors and frames without removing the finish.
